Nigeria/UK deportation deal: CYID raises concerns
The Centre for Youths Integrated Development (CYID), a non-profit organization with a mission to empower young people and support vulnerable communities has called for urgent national attention to Nigeria’s preparedness for the reintegration of deported migrants, particularly offenders, following recent migration agreements between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
While the agreements aim to promote structured and legal migration, CYID warns that insufficient reintegration systems could expose communities to increased vulnerability and security risks.
“Return is not the end of migration — it is the beginning of reintegration. Without proper systems, we risk turning returnees into victims of exclusion or actors in survival-driven crime,” said Aihawu Victor, Director of CYID.
CYID emphasized the need for:
A structured national reintegration framework for offender returnees
Stronger inter-agency coordination
Community-based reintegration models
Investment in monitoring and support systems
The organization noted that reintegration must be treated as a national priority, not just a funded activity.
