48,878 migrants intercepted, returned to Libya in two years
A total of 48,878 migrants were intercepted along Central Mediterranean route and returned to Libya between January 2024 and December 2025.
We, voiceforafricanmigrants.org extracted the information from an infographic posted on X formerly twitter by IOM Libya.
The infographic showed 21,762 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in 2024 while 27,116 were meted the same treatment in 2025.
The information showed that the interception and return of migrants to Libya in 2025 was higher than that of 2024 by 5,354.
The fate of the migrants after their return to Libya was not stated. What is known is that Libya has been a horror of a place for Sub Saharan Africans following the externalisation of border by the EU.
