SOS Humanity (international) is mourning the demise of two people on the sea.

The organisation noted amidst regret that hundreds of people were reported missing, amid extreme weather and the continued absence of safe passage in recent weeks.

In a post titled ++ TRIGGER WARNING: DEATH ++ Another two lives – lost at sea, SOS Humanity, said: “Yesterday, between two rescue operations, the crew of Humanity 1 encountered a heartbreaking sight: a deceased person floating in the water. After the second rescue, a second body was discovered.”

In both instances, SOS Humanity said the conditions indicated that they had been in the water for some time – and could not be recovered. Too late to be rescued, never too late to be mourned: Two silent victims of shipwrecks that went unnoticed.

“In recent weeks, hundreds of people were reported missing, amid extreme weather and the continued absence of safe passage. With estimates of up to 1,000 missing, this could be one of the largest largely unreported disasters in the Central Mediterranean in the last years.

“The 2 people we encountered yesterday may have been among the missing. Their deaths leave a deep trace that will stay with us. Our thoughts are with the survivors and the crew on board of Humanity 1, who witnessed these moments, and with all those who lost their lives at sea.”

In light of these traumatic experiences, SOS Humanity  urged the Italian authorities to urgently assign Humanity 1 to a closer place of safety for the survivors on board. Thank you all for sharing.
