Humanity 1 rescue ship detained in Ortona after rescuing 160 people
Humanity 1, SOS Humanity (International) rescue ship has been detained in Ortona.
Ortona is a coastal town and municipality of the Province of Chieti in the Italian region of Abruzzo, with some 23,000 inhabitants.
Announcing the detention of Humanity 1, SOS Humanity said: “After rescuing 160 people in two rescues last week, our ship Humanity 1 has been provisionally detained and placed under investigation in Ortona. Why? Because we refused to communicate with the Libyan authorities.”
SOS Humanity alleged that the Libyan authorities are illegally forcing people seeking safety back to Libya, where they face grave human rights violations. “As part of the Justice Fleet Alliance, we will not legitimise those who endanger lives!Every detention reduces rescue capacity at sea — and puts more people at risk.”
