SOS Humanity demands complete withdrawal of Piantedosi law, rescues 36
SOS Humanity (International) has demanded the complete withdrawal of the #Piantedosi law by the Italian authorities.
Piantedosi Decree came into force in 2023, and stipulates, among other things, that non-governmental rescue ships must immediately sail to the assigned port after the first rescue and thus leave the area where most maritime emergencies occur, even if there are open distress cases in the vicinity.
Calling for total withdrawal of the law, SOS Humanity (International) said “An Italian law amendment extends the measures against civilian rescue ships to civilian aircraft. We demand the complete withdrawal of the #Piantedosi law, which systematically obstructs rescues and the documentation of human rights violations on the #Mediterranean!”
The organization had earlier announced that it rescued 36 distressed people . “Coordinated by ital. authorities, our crew rescued 36 people in distress at sea this afternoon, among them unaccompanied minors.”
SOS Humanity International said “the survivors were found on an unseaworthy and overcrowded fibreglass boat, Crotone was assigned as place of safety.”
It subsequently added that the 36 survivors “rescued by our crew on Thursday have safely disembarked in #Crotone. A closer port of safety would have allowed us to be back in the area by now, where we are urgently needed!
“We wish the survivors all the best for their onward journey!”
