Sea Watch International remembers 866 migrants who drowned in Lampedusa,Maltese coast
Sea Watch International is remembering 866 migrants who drowned in Lampedusa and Maltese coast a decade ago.
Three hundred of the victims drowned in Lampedusa while the remaining 500 drowned off Maltese coast.
“Today, we remember the 366 people who drowned off Lampedusas’ coast on 03 October 2013. When almost 500 people died off the Maltese coast a week later, Italy launched the first and only attempt at a state and humanitarian sea rescue: Mare Nostrum,”Sea Watch International said.
A year later, Sea Watch International said: “the mission was replaced by the European border control agency #Frontex. Illegal pushbacks, coordination of the so-called Libyan coastguard, and other human rights violations are Europes answer against people on the move ever since.
“In 2015 we founded ourselves out of necessity and have been standing up for human rights with clear demands: To end the dying in the Mediterranean, we need a joint European sea rescue and open and safe escape routes for all! #safepassage.”
