European Court of Justice judgement against Frontex scandalous- Sea Watch International
The judgment handed down today by the European Court of Justice on the lawsuit against #Frontex is a scandal, Sea Watch International has said.
The border protection agency (Frontex) was sued by people from Syria who were unlawfully pushed back to Turkey by Frontex after fleeing to Greece in 2016.
In doing so, Sea Watch International said “#Frontex violated international human rights, including the right to asylum, the principle of non-refoulement, the ban on collective expulsion, and the right to legal counsel.
“The European Court of Justice rejected the complaint. The argument is the lack of responsibility of the European Border Agency as far as return measures are concerned. It is only there to provide operational and technical support.”
The ruling, it said demonstrates the sanctity of a European institution structurally set up in a legal space that allows human rights violations and covers up for perpetrators by diffusing responsibility.
