Sea Watch International,
an organization that saves lives in the Mediterranean Sea, has protested against the disembarkation of people in Tunisia.

The practice, according to the organisation is against international law.
Sea Watch International said this while condemning Italy’s violence against people on the move.

It said: “Italy plays a violent political game at the cost of people on the move. After Aurora’s 37-hour rescue operation including the rescue of 72 people, 🇮🇹authorities detained our rescue ship for 20 days on fabricated grounds. 20 days, we can’t rescue people from drowning.

“🇮🇹authorities deliberately assigned our ship an unreachable port. With temperatures reaching 46 degrees on the deck of the Aurora, dwindling water supplies & health emergencies, 🇮🇹jeopardized the safety of everyone on board with their harassment.
After 16h rescue, the🇮🇹authorities assigned us Trapani in Sicily as a port – inaccessible for the Aurora and almost 4 times as far away as Lampedusa. After repeated requests for a closer port, Italy even instructed us to request a Tunisian port.”

Sea Watch International noted that the disembarkation of persons in Tunisia is against international law, adding “Tunisia is neither a safe port nor a safe country of origin, as @hrw explicitly states. The dangerous conditions on board, forced🇮🇹to grant us permission to enter Lampedusa on Saturday afternoon.

“Nevertheless, authorities blocked Aurora now on fabricated grounds. But no matter what happens, we will continue to rescue people until Europe finally fulfills its rescue obligations. We demand the immediate release of the Aurora & freedom of movement for all.”
